SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time

Installation

Introduction

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time (SLERT) is a low latency, deterministic operating system based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES). More specifically, it is an add-on product to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10). Contained in SLERT's electronic download media are all of the packages associated with the real time kernel, libraries, tools, and utilities. In order to install, configure and use SLERT, you must first install SLES 10, and then install the real time kernel and packages. Listed below are the detailed steps required.

Installation Instructions

  1. Install and update SLES 10: If you have not already done so, please first install SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10) on your server, register your server with Novell Customer Center (NCC), and then bring your subscription current by applying all available updates. If you do not have a SLES 10 subscription, you can purchase one, or obtain an evaluation copy at www.novell.com/linux, and follow the instructions provided for installing and updating SLES 10. Do not, however, update your subscription to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 1 (SLES 10 SP1). SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time (SLERT) is presently not supported on SLES 10 SP1. To install the Real Time kernel and packages to SLES 10 SP1, you will need SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time SP1.

  2. Login your system and locate installation source: Only after you have successfully installed and updated SLES 10 should you install SLERT as an add-on product. After booting up your updated server, log into it as “root.” If you have physical media for SLERT, then insert it into an available drive.

  3. Start installation tool: Next, bring up the YaST configuration tool by clicking on "Computer" at the lower left hand corner of your screen and choosing YaST from the menu choices. If you do not see an icon available for starting YaST, you may need to click on the "More Applications..." button in order to find it. Once the "YaST Control Center" interface comes up, select "Add-on Product" from the Software group.

  4. Locate installation source: In the "Add-On Product Media" window that appears, choose “DVD” if you have a DVD. If instead you have a local ISO image of SLERT, then choose "Local Directory" and in the "Local Directory or ISO" pop up window, check the box for "ISO Image." Specify the path to your ISO by browsing to the image location in the resultant browsing window. Click on "Ok" when done, specifying the source in the pop up dialog box (note that for a physical DVD, no pop up window will appear, and YaST will automatically use the DVD drive).

  5. Accept License Agreement: A License Agreement will now appear. You must accept it if you wish to continue. Select the "Yes, I Agree to the License Agreement" radio button and press “Next.” At this point the packages that are on the new install source will be cataloged, after which the "Software Management" window will open up.

  6. Locate SLERT packages for installation: In the “Software Management” window, you will see a package search facility. Click on the pull down menu in the upper left corner of the "Software Management" window and select "Patterns." This will bring up a list of available installation patterns of packages. Look for the "Real Time Enterprise" group. The SLERT base pattern will be pre-selected for your convenience.

  7. Select SLERT packages for installation: The patterns in the subwindow of the "Software Management" window define package selections in the right subwindow. You can see which packages belong to which patterns by clicking on the pattern name. You can install any, some, or all of the patterns under the "Real Time Enterprise" pattern group according to your needs. The easiest way to select all of the packages in a pattern is to click on the selection square to the left of the pattern name in the left selection panel. This should activate the pattern and you can confirm that all of the packages that belong to it in the upper right panel get selected as well. Unless you have specific needs, we recommend you install all available SLERT patterns and packages.

  8. Install SLERT packages: Press “Accept” in the lower right side of the window to install your selected patterns and packages. A progress bar will appear to inform you of the status of the package set install process. Please wait until all selected packages are installed. At the end of the package installation process, a pop up window will appear, asking whether you want to install more packages or not. Choose “No” at this point. This will exit you from the Software Management YaST applet.

  9. Perform optional post installation configuration: If you are planning to shield from interrupts and manually bias some interrupts to the shielded CPUs in your real time environment, please be aware that the interrupt load balancer does not cooperate with this scheme. If this is the case for your environment, turn off the interrupt load balancer with this command in a terminal window:

    # chkconfig irq_balancer off

  10. Reboot into SLERT: Your SLERT installation is now complete. Reboot your system. The default kernel which will be booted will be the SLERT production kernel (Trace=Off, Debug=Off).
