SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time (SLERT) is a low latency, deterministic operating system based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES). More specifically, it is an add-on product to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10). Contained in SLERT electronic download media are all of the packages associated with the real time kernel, libraries, tools, and utilities. In order to install, configure and use SLERT, you must first install SLES 10, and then install the real time kernel and packages. With SLERT you get:

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time is part of Novell's open source desktop to data center SUSE Linux Enterprise platform, and it offers the following key features:

• CPU shielding - To dedicate CPU resources for high priority processes
• Kernel preemption - To ensure fast response to external events and optimized kernel critical sections
• Priority inheritance - To solve the inversion problem for mission critical processes
• Frequency-based scheduling - To better coordinate multiple execution threads within predefined CPU cycles

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time Service Pack 1 adds support for the latest open source InfiniBand software stack, Open Fabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) 1.2. OFED is an emerging industry standard for server and storage connectivity under the auspices of the Open Fabrics Alliance, designed to enable higher bandwidth, lower latency, and high performance distributed computing. Additionally, this maintenance release includes all of the cumulative patches and bug fixes for SLERT that have been issued since its launch.
