SLES 10 on Microsoft's Virtual Server

Download and Installation

Requirements

Planning

  1. Decide on the name of the virtual machine (VMName).

Create A SLES Virtual Machine

  1. Create a directory to place the SLES virtual machine image. Suggestion: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Machines\
  2. Copy the disk image from the DVD to the directory created in step
  3. Open the Virtual Server Administration website. From Microsoft TechNet:
  4. On the left-side navigation panel, select: Virtual Machines->Create. This will bring up the Create Virtual Machine page.
  5. Notes for using Create Virtual machine:
  6. Configuration: after clicking on the “Create” button, Virtual Server will create a configuration file and bring up the Status and Configuration windows. The only thing you need to be concerned about is the “Virtual network adapter 1”. By default, Virtual Server will create a random MAC address for the virtual network adapter. However, the virtual hard disk image that you are using already has a MAC address of 00-03-FF-33-1E-45. Therefore, you will need to change the random MAC address generated by Virtual Server to this value. Click on “Network Adapter”. Then for Virtual network adapter 1, select “Static” and change the value to 00-03-FF-33-1E-45. Then click on “Ok”.
  7. Start the server. Move the mouse over the virtual machine name and a popup winow appears. Select “Turn On”.
  8. Display the console. After a few moments, a thumbnail of the console appears. Click on the thumbnail. The console will appear.
  9. Login to the server with username "interopt" and password "novell".

Networking Notes

No two MAC addresses should be the same. Therefore, if you plan to run more than one SLES virtual machine from the disk image, you should probably let Virtual Server proceed with the random MAC address and then go into YAST once SLES is running and setup the network.

YAST Configuration with a Random MAC Address

  1. Create a virtual machine as given above; however, leave out step 6, where the MAC address is changed.
  2. Once SLES is up and running, bring up YAST.
  3. Select “Network Devices” on the left-side navigation window.
  4. Under “Network Devices,” select “Network Card.”
  5. On the “Network Setup Method” leave it as “Traditional Method with ifup” and select the “Next” button.
  6. “Network Card Configuration Overview” On this window two network cards are displayed, one being displayed with an ip address of “DHCP” the other one has an ip address value of “Not configured.” The network card with “DHCP” is the original network card with the MAC address that was given on the disk image. The other card (“Not configured”), is the card that Virtual Server is now presenting with the randomly generated MAC address. SLES knows about the new card, but it needs to be configured.
  7. Delete the pre-configured card. Highlight the network card with the “DHCP” ip address. Click on the “Delete” button.
  8. Configure new networking card. Now there is only one networking card that has not been configured. Highlight the network card. Then click on “Edit.” In order to have the card get it's address dynamically (DHCP), just click on “Next” on the Network Address Setup page. Then click on “Finish” on the “Network Card Configuration Overview” window.
  9. Exit YAST.
