Download and Installation

checking MD5 values of downloaded files

The following table lists the downloadable image names, their MD5 checksums, and approximate file sizes. Use this table to validate that your downloaded images are correct.

Filename MD5 value Approx. Size
sles9-vmwarews5-vm.zip 8ebff11ff563b79aac98b7a586412ca5 675.7 MB

To verify downloaded file integrity, you should check each file's MD5 values by doing one of the following:

  1. On a Linux system at the shell prompt, enter the following command:
    md5sum filename
where filename is the name of the file you are verifying.
  2. On a Windows system, obtain a Windows-compatible MD5-based checksum utility from the Web and follow the usage instructions for the utility.

Installing the VMWare Workstation 5 Virtual Machine of NLD

Downloaded sles9-vmwarews5-vm.zip.

After you have downloaded the VMWare Workstation 5 Virtual Machine of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, unzip the file (nld9-vmwarews5-vm.zip) to the folder on your Linux or Windows system where you keep your Virtual Machines. By default, this is "home/vmware" on Linux and "My Documents\My Virtual Machines" on Windows. When unzipping the file, make sure that you recreate the folders contained in the ZIP file.

After the file has been unzipped, start VMWare Workstation 5, open the Virtual Machine, then power it on. At this point, you will receive a message asking you whether you want to create a new identifier or keep the existing identifier. We strongly recommend that you keep the existing identifier. If you don't, you will need to reconfigure the network card within the Virtual Machine.

NOTE: In some circumstances the XWindows system will fail to initialize correctly within the Virtual Machine. If this happens you will see a text based console repeated four times on the screen. To fix this you will need to perform the following steps:

  1. Login as root (The Password is novell in lower case).
  2. Change to runlevel 3 by typing init 3, then enter.
  3. Reset the XServer by typing sax2 -r, then enter.
  4. When the configuration screen prompts you to accept the configuration or change it, press OK to Accept.
  5. In the text based console Start the XWindows system by typing init 5, then enter or restart the system by typing init 6, then return.

For more information on VMWare Workstation 5, see the VMWare Web site.
