ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3 --- ZENworks Server Update

December 18, 2003

Overview

The information in this Readme file pertains to Novell® ZENworks® for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack (SP) 3. The Support Pack consists of two separate updates: the server update and the client update. The server update contains files needed on the ZENworks Server supporting workstations that use the Novell ClientTM with the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update.

Each update contains new files for all components contained in the ZENworks for Desktops product only. If you download the support pack files, you need to extract it at the root of the drive because it contains directory paths that could exceed the DOS limits.

The purpose of this support pack is to provide a bundle of fixes that have all been tested together. These files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, and integration testing with other Novell products.

This support pack includes all fixes from the previous ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Packs; therefore, you do not need to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP1 or ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP2 before installing this support pack.

Do not install individual files from either of the updates included in the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Support Pack.

Install the NetWare® 6 Support Pack 3 or NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 6 before you install this or any other Novell product support packs (like GroupWise® or ZENworks for Servers). Product support packs are included with the Consolidated Support Pack CD, or they can be downloaded individually from the Consolidated Support Pack download Web page.

As a general rule, when you update ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 using the Consolidated Support Pack, you should apply the server update files on the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 back-end server prior to updating the workstation with Novell Client Support Pack files.

For information on the latest Consolidated Support Pack issues, see TID 10085454 at the Support Connection Web site .

To order the Support Pack CD, see the Consolidated Support Pack Ordering Information Web page.

1.0 Downloading and Preparing for the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update

The ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update is to be used in conjunction with the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update. When you have met the hardware and software requirements and prerequisites for installation, use the instructions in this document to install ZENworks for Desktops software on a NetWare or Windows server. If you are installing the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update from Consolidated Support Pack (CSP 10), download and install CSP 10 and copy the self-extracting file (zfd32sp3.exe) for ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 to the root of a local or server drive, then run the .exe at that location. The .exe will extract a folder named zfd32sp3, which will contain two subfolders:

1.1 Server Update Installation Prerequisites

When installing the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update to any server, you must make sure that the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 product has already been installed on the same server. The SP3 NIS Installation program checks the existing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 installation on a server to verify which components are installed there.

Only those server components that were previously installed are affected by the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update. If you want to add other ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 server components, you must run the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 installation program and add these components prior to updating with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3.

Make sure that you understand the software prerequisites for using this product. This information is displayed in one of the initial installation dialog boxes. You can also find it in the prereq.txt file located in the zfd32sp3\zenservr\zenworks\ni\license\<language>\ folder of the download package.

1.2 Preparing Windows NT/2000 Servers for the SP3 Server Update Installation

Make sure that Novell ConsoleOneTM is not running when you install this product.

Before you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update on a Windows* NT* or Windows 2000 server, make sure that you shut down any ZENworks services that might already be running, including Inventory, Workstation Import, Workstation Removal and Imaging Service.

Double-click the NT Services icon in the Windows Control Panel to open the services console and to verify whether Workstation Import and Workstation Removal services are running. You can shut down the services at the console.

Double-click the NDS® Services icon in the Windows Control Panel to open the services console and to verify whether ImgServ and ZENImgDS are running. You can shut down these services at the console.

You can right-click the Inventory Server icon in the System tray > click Exit to stop the Inventory service.

1.3 Preparing NetWare Servers for the SP3 Installation

If you will be installing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update on a NetWare server, it will be necessary to unload java.nlm (at the Server Console, enter java -exit). Make sure you do this when Java is not being used by another process and that the proper Java components have already been installed.

You should also make sure that ConsoleOne is not running when you install this product.

1.4 Preparing for ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Workstation Inventory Installation

Before you install the Workstation Inventory component of the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update, make sure you do the following:

2.0 Installing the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update

2.1 Running the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update Program

To install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 files to the server or servers you need to upgrade, run install.exe from the zfd32sp3\zenservr\zenworks directory in the server location where you downloaded ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3, then follow the prompts.

IMPORTANT:  Do not install individual files from ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3 or consolidate the files from this support pack with files from ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 shipping product to expedite a single installation session. This overlay method is not supported.

ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 must be completely installed as shipped (or with SP1 or SP2 applied), followed by the installation of ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3.

2.2 Top-Down Deployment of Inventory Installation

When you install the Workstation Inventory component, always begin the installation at the topmost level server and proceed with the next lower-level servers. For example, in an Inventory setup with a Root Server and a Leaf Server, complete the Inventory installation at the Root Server, and then run the installation for the Leaf Server.

3.0 What's New in Support Pack 3

3.1 Support for ConsoleOne 1.3.6

Although ConsoleOne 1.3.5 will continue to be supported with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3, we recommend that you use ConsoleOne 1.3.6 to administer ZENworks for Desktop objects in Novell eDirectory.

3.2 New Feature in the Workstation Inventory Component

ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 includes an Enable Filter option in its Data Export Wizard that lets you filter and export software information on the basis of the query you define. For example, if you want to export all of the Microsoft software information stored in the Inventory database, define the query as "Vendor=Microsoft" and select all the software attributes (Vendor, Name, and Version) in the Data Export wizard, then select the Enable Filter option to export the Microsoft software information.

In this example, if you do not select the Enable Filter option, the Data Export tool exports Microsoft software information and any other vendor's software information stored in the Inventory database.
