Managing workstations includes tracking them, moving or renaming them, and tracking moved or renamed workstations. See the following sections:
When you delete a Workstation object or an inventory database from the NDSTM tree, information and error messages a logged in ZENDEL.LOG located in \PUBLIC\ZENWORKS. The log file records the deletion status.
Logged details for the deleted Workstation object include workstation DN, date and time, and success or failure of the operation.
Failure status indicates that the workstation DN that was deleted from NDS did not have any information in the inventory database. Failure may also indicate that the database engine running on the database server was down when the deletion was initiated.
We recommend the log file should be deleted periodically in case of a large file size.
As long as a workstation is moved or renamed with the version of NWADMIN32 that has the ZENworksTM snap-ins, the snap-ins will capture the rename and move commands for a Workstation object and write the changes to the container's workstation tracking attribute. You can view this list on the Workstation Tracking page of the container.
As a workstation is moved and renamed, a trail is left behind to show where the workstation resides. This trail is found in the container's workstation tracking attribute. After the Workstation object has been renamed and moved, the next time the workstation registration agent runs on the workstation, the workstation registration agent will first determine if the workstation is still in the tree. If the Workstation object is not found in the tree, it will read the workstation tracking attribute and follow the trail to the new workstation name or place. As it follows the trail, the workstation registration agent also removes the trail from the attribute, thereby cleaning up the workstation tracking.
Once it finds the new name or place, the workstation registration agent will write the new distinguished name to the workstation Registry, and the workstation is then associated with the Workstation object in the tree. If the workstation registration agent doesn't find the workstation, it will re-register for importation.
In NetWare® Administrator, click a Workstation object.
Click Object > Move.
Select a new container context > click OK > OK.
Right-click the container where the object was moved from > click Details.
Click Workstation Tracking to verify that the tracking information was recorded.
In NetWare Administrator, select the container where the Workstation resides or the container whose Workstations you need to track.
Click Object > Details > Workstation Tracking.
Entries in Workstation Tracking mean that the workstation needs to be registered again (by running WSREG.EXE or WSREG.DLL) to update the workstation name and clear the entries from Workstation Tracking.
If necessary, re-register the workstations.
Note that registered Workstations that have been inactive for a certain period can be removed.
