Dial-Up Networking Dialog Box

Windows* 95/98 workstations will display the 95 RAS Configuration Policy and Windows NT* workstations will display the NT RAS Configuration Policy.

The Microsoft* Remote Access Service (RAS) must be installed on your administrative workstation.

The fields include the following:


Phonebook Entry To Dial

Click the down-arrow for a drop-down list of entries > click an entry. This sets (or changes) the workstation's connection for dial-up networking.


Phone Number Preview

Displays the telephone number for the entry displayed in the Phonebook Entry To Dial field.


New

Accesses the Edit Phonebook Entry dialog box. There are two tabs, Basic and Server:


Basic Tab

The fields on this tab include the following:

Entry Name
Country Code
Area Code
Phone Number
Use Telephony Dialing Properties


Entry Name

The name to associate with the dial-up number (for example, home telephone or PPP connection). This name is displayed when you are asked to select the number to dial.


Country Code

A pop-up menu containing a list of country codes. Select one from this list. This field is enabled when the Use Telephony Dialing Properties check box is marked.


Area Code

The area code of the number to dial. This field is enabled when the Use Telephony Dialing Properties check box is marked. Do not include any leading zeros in the area code.


Phone Number

The number to dial. Special modifiers can be used with this number to accommodate various situations.

The following modifiers can be used:

(comma) Pause before continuing to the next character in the number field. The comma is usually used when dialing an outside line, and can be used to pause long enough to grant the telephone system sufficient time to switch over. For example: 9,555-1212

Listen for a long silence before continuing.

   P

   

Use pulse (analog) dialing.

   T

   

Use touch tone (digital) dialing.

   W

   

Listen for a dial tone before continuing (your modem must be 2400 BPS or faster).

Click to enable the Country code and Area code fields


Server Tab

The fields on this tab inlcude the following:

Dial-up Server Type
Network Protocols
TCP/IP Settings
Enable Software Compression
Enable PPP LCP Extensions
Require Encrypted Password


Dial-up Server Type

Select the appropriate type.


Network Protocols

The protocols for communicating with the server after a connection has been established. The following protocols are available, depending on the selected dial-up server type:

TCP/IP. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. To set the server's and your address information and other IP settings, click this check box > TCP/IP Settings > provide the needed information.

TMIPX/SPX Compatible. Click if you are connecting to a NetWare® server that does not use TCP/IP.

NetBEUI. Click if you are connecting to a Microsoft* network that does not use TCP/IP.


TCP/IP Settings

Click to change your TCP/IP address and/or settings. If you are calling a server that uses RAS, you do not need to make any modifications. This option accesses the TCP/IP Settings dialog box, which has the following fields:

Server Assigned IP Address. Click to have the dial-up server assign a TCP/IP address to the workstation.

Specify an IP Address. Click if the workstation already has a TCP/IP address. Do not define the address if you want to use the workstation's TCP/IP address. If you want to override that address, type an address in the IP address field.

Server Assigned Name Server Addresses. Click if you want the dial-up server to assign the client a DNS.

Specify Name Server Addresses. Click to specify your desired DNS and/or WINS (Windows Internet Name Service). Once you click this radio button, you can then specify the name server addresses (Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, Primary WINS, Secondary WINS).

Use IP Header Compression. Click if required.

Use Default Gateway on Remote Network. Click to use the gateway to route your TCP/IP traffic.


Enable Software Compression

Click to allow software to compress your data. This will be in addition to any hardware compression your equipment may provide.


Enable PPP LCP Extensions

Click if the user's Internet service provider (ISP) offers Point-to-Point protocol (PPP).


Require Encrypted Password

Click if supported.
