Novell® ZENworks® 6 Web Self-Service, working in conjunction with ZENworks 6 Desktop Management or ZENworks for Desktops (ZfD) 4.0.1, provides distribution of applications to users through a Web browser interface.
ZfD provides administrator provisioning of applications. Web Self-Service enhances ZfD by providing user self-provisioning. Users request applications from an administrator-defined catalog of applications. Through a workflow approval process, referred to as ApprovalFlowTM, user requests are approved or denied. You can delegate approval authority to individual organizations or keep it at an IT or Help Desk level.
Web Self-Service also provides the ability to charge for applications. An application charge can include both purchase and usage fees. A process is included that tracks application usage on a per-minute or per-use basis.
Users request and launch applications from a Web browser interface. Users responsible for approving or denying the requests also use a Web browser interface. This interface is provided through a Web portal powered by Novell exteNd DirectorTM 4.1. The exteNd Director 4.1 version included with Web Self-Service is limited to the functionality required to implement only a Web Self-Service portal. If you want your portal to include more than Web Self-Service, you can use Novell exteNd Director 4.1 Standard Edition, available separately.
The Web Self-Service Installation guide (WebSelfServiceInstallation.pdf) is included on the root of the ZENworks 6 Web Self-Service Program CD. The guide includes system requirements, sample configurations, and detailed installation instructions.
If you are upgrading to Web Self-Service from ZENworks OnDemand ServicesTM 2, you can view or download the Web Self-Service Upgrade guide at the ZENworks 6 documentation Web site.
The Web Self-Service Administration guide is also available at the ZENworks 6 documentation Web site. This guide includes information to help you use and administer Web Self-Service after installation.
If Tomcat is not located in the root drive, an error might occur that the Web application server was unable to successfully expand the nps.war file. This means some of the paths that are extracted from the nps.war file exceed the allowed operating system character limit. To resolve this error, install the Web application server at the root of your drive.
The ConsoleOne snap-ins provided for Web Self-Service are not compatible with DNS-rooted trees.
On Windows* 95/98, users must be logged in to Windows in order to launch ZfD DeFrame thin-client applications from the Launch Item gadget in the Web browser. If a user does not log in, the launch will fail.
On Windows 95, you must update Winsock to Winsock 2.0 in order to launch ZfD DeFrame thin-client applications using RDP. Winsock 2.0 is available for download from Microsoft.
Occasionally, a user will be unable to launch ZfD DeFrame thin-client applications that are usage based. Instead, the user will receive the following error message:
Failed to activate usage associated with the application. Please wait for a detailed usage error...
Regardless of how long the user waits, a detailed error is not displayed. The most likely cause of this problem is that the UsageServer is hung and is not able to communicate with the UsageClient running on the DeFrame terminal server. To test for this:
At a workstation command prompt, change to the \zenworks\ondemand\vbroker\bin directory on the server where the UsageServer is located.
Enter osfind.
If the OSFind utility responds by displaying information about the UsageServer's OSAgent and object implementations on the network, the UsageServer is functioning properly. If the utility does not return anything for several minutes, the UsageServer is not functioning.
If the UsageServer is functioning properly, you need to ensure that you have correctly set up the UsageClient and enabled the application for usage. For instructions, see the Web Self-Service Administration guide at the ZENworks 6 documentation Web site.
If the UsageServer is not functioning properly, try stopping the UsageServer and restarting it. If that does not work, the UsageServer's OSAgent probably has a conflict on the network that can only be resolved by moving the UsageServer to another network server within the same subnet as the DeFrame terminal server. For instructions about stopping, starting, or moving the UsageServer, see the Web Self-Service Administration guide at the ZENworks 6 documentation Web site.
