Installing the Server Software

NOTE:  This procedure describes the steps to install a new implementation of ZfS 2.0. To upgrade from ManageWise 2.7 to ZfS2 Management and Monitoring Services, see Upgrading to ZfS Management and Monitoring Services from ManageWise 2.7. To migrate from ZfS 1.0 Policy and Distribution Services to ZfS2 Policy and Distribution Services, see Upgrading to ZfS Management and Monitoring Services from ManageWise 2.7.

To install the server software:

  1. If you haven't already done so, log in with Admin or equivalent rights to the target management server and the container containing the target management server.

  2. If Sybase is running on the server on which the database will be installed, quit the Sybase engine now.

  3. Insert the ZfS Software CD.

The startup screen appears. If the startup screen is not automatically launched after inserting the CD, you can launch it by running WINSETUP.EXE at the root of the CD.

  4. Click ZENworks for Servers > Install Management and Monitoring Services.

If you restart the target management server after you mapped a drive at the workstation, the ZfS installation may no longer recognize the mapped drive. Detach the tree from NetWare Connection, disconnect the mapped drive, and remap the volume.

HINT:  We recommend that you do not install on the SYS: volume of your target management server.

  5. Click Install Site Management Services and Agents.

  6. Click Next at the Welcome screen.

  7. Select the desired ZfS components listed in the following table.

IMPORTANT:  You need Admin or equivalent rights to target servers. Create a shared volume on all Windows NT servers on which you will be installing the ZfS agents.

    Server Components Install On

    Management Site Services

    Management server.

    Server Management

All NetWare and Windows NT servers that you want to manage.

    Traffic Analysis

One server (NetWare or Windows NT/2000) per segment.

HINT:  To monitor a segment in a pure Windows NT/2000 environment, you must install this agent on a Windows NT/2000 server. Segments that include both NetWare and Windows NT/2000 servers can use the agent on a NetWare or Windows NT/2000 server.

Long filename support is not available on NetWare servers.

    Inventory Management

All NetWare and Windows NT servers that you want in the inventory database.

HINT:  To scan for inventory items such as hard disk model name, hard disk size, CDROM model name, and software registered in the PRODUCTS.DAT file, installation of the NMA agent is required.

    Remote Management

All NetWare and Windows NT servers that you want to remotely control.

  8. Click Next.

  9. If you selected to install Management Site Services, complete one of the following:

    • If you are installing from a product CD with a valid license, accept the default path to the license file on the CD or browse to the correct path for the license > click Next.
    • If you are installing from an evaluation CD with a trial license, check the Install Evaluation License check box > click Next.

IMPORTANT:  Because Management and Monitoring Services and Policy and Distribution services use different licensing models, they each require their own licenses. Even after completing this procedure and installing a license, you will still need to install a Policy and Distribution license when you install Policy and Distribution services.

  10. Select a NetWare server that will be a management site server > specify the location (volume and path) where the software will be installed > click Next.

You must have rights to copy files to the target server and create rights in the same container as the selected server.

  11. Enter a name for the service locator object and specify its context.

Other management objects will need to be created in this context. If multiple management sites will be used, specify a context that will be readily accessible. The default name and context are provided based on the management server you selected in Step 10.

  12. Click Next.

  13. Enter a password for each service-level account displayed > click Next.

There are three database user accounts: MW_DBA with Database rights, MW_Updater with Read and Write rights, and MW_Reader with Read Only rights. These accounts are used for a number of services to access the database. Normally, you would use these accounts only to designate an access level for third-party products to use when accessing the database.

  14. If you selected to install the Management Site Services component in Step 7, enter the default password for the remote management agents > click Next.

This password is used as the default to install the remote management agent for NetWare and Windows NT servers.

  15. Click Next to confirm the folder where ConsoleOne and the management snap-ins will be installed.

    or

Click Browse to change the location > click Next.

  17. Review the summary list of selections you made in the preceding steps. To change a setting, click Back. Otherwise, click Finish to complete the installation.

The ZfS server files are installed.

  18. If you are not migrating a ManageWise 2.x database or do not need to reconfigure your discovery parameters beyond the default settings (for example, using SNMP community names other than PUBLIC), select Yes when prompted to start the autodiscovery process; otherwise, click No.

IMPORTANT:  To migrate a ManageWise 2.x database, you need an empty ZfS discovery database. Therefore, it is important that you do not start autodiscovery at this time. For detailed instructions, see Upgrading to ZfS Management and Monitoring Services from ManageWise 2.7.

  19. When prompted to start the back-end processes, select Yes if you started the autodiscovery process; otherwise, select No.

IMPORTANT:  If you are installing Management and Monitoring Services on a NetWare 6 server, select No when prompted to start the back-end process. You need to download and install the ZfS2 Support Pack 1a and the ZfS2 JVM patches, then start the back-end processes. For more information, see Upgrading or Migrating NetWare 4.x/5.x Servers Running ZENworks for Servers 2 to NetWare 6 in the Installation and Setup guide.

  20. Click Finish.

HINT:  We recommend that you restart the management server if you are running BTRIEVE* or will be receiving SNMP v2 traps.

After all the ZfS agents and Java processes are installed, they are functional and activated. For managed servers on NetWare, the ZfS agents are automatically started. For managed servers on Windows NT/2000, you must restart Windows NT/2000 after you install the agents. If you installed the server inventory agents on Windows NT servers, run the NTSCAN32.EXE file from the destination folder.

Installing the Management Console Software

You can install multiple management consoles for accessing data on a management server. You must have Admin rights to the workstation to install the management console software on a Windows NT workstation.

To install the ZfS console software:
