Novell Open Enterprise Server 2

Health Monitoring

Overview

Need more time in your day? It's now within reach: Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 includes the tools and standards support you need to simplify many enterprise-wide management tasks. You can reclaim thousands of administrative hours with two key features: Common Information Model (CIM) integration and Web-based server-health monitoring.

Streamline Management with CIM

With full support for CIM, Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 significantly reduces redundant network-management tasks. CIM is an open industry standard created by the Distributed Management Task Force. Through its common and consistent definition of management information, all of your systems, applications, networks and devices essentially speak the same management language.

The CIM standard—which relies on object-oriented modeling—ensures interoperability across a network. You can view the same management information for all of your systems and devices without logging in to them individually. This reduces the number of hours required to manage the network and gives you a comprehensive view of all network components and how they interrelate. Consider the following example:

Your organization purchases three different printers from various vendors and sets them up respectively in your Chicago, Berlin and Hong Kong offices. Because the printers are networked together with a CIM foundation, you can simultaneously view management information for all of them from your headquarters in Mexico City. You can view their manufacturer and serial numbers (to simplify inventorying), their model numbers (to expedite toner orders), their locations on the network (to accelerate troubleshooting), their print queues (to assess usage) and their general relationship to the other applications that run throughout the network.

Monitor Server Health From Anywhere

CIM is put to practical, cost-effective use in Novell Open Enterprise Server 2. The various CIM components—including the CIM Client, Server, Protocol Adapter, Object Manager and Provider—work together to deliver browser-based server-health monitoring.

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 also offers a Quick Status field that enables you to skim various aspects of server health. Categories in this field include memory, operating system, processes/threads, network and CPUs. You can select any of these items for more detailed health-check information. With Novell Open Enterprise Server 2, you don't have to be logged in at the server console to keep systems up and running: you can securely review and manage server health from anywhere via the Web. The resulting flexibility and convenience drive down your total cost of network ownership and give you more time to pursue strategic network planning and programs.
