Recorded at SUSECON 2016 as session TUT91122

Enter the mind of a common hacker and think like they do. This presentation will look into common techniques and technologies used to break your systems. Once we know how to hack your system, we’ll talk about easy-to-implement countermeasures. Portscan your own system, become a black hole, create adaptive firewalls, and implement mandatory access controls available with SUSE’s SELinux. Lean how to detect attacks in-progress, who is attacking you, and how to determine if a system is already compromised. This presentation promotes a balanced approach to security, keeping systems useful and accessible to authorized users, while with a little effort, thwarting most, if not all, malicious hacking attempts. Craig Lamparter is a twenty-four year veteran of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, with a focus on Linux research and deployment/support principles. Craig is responsible for enabling Linux on ProLiant hardware, an active community advocate and works with a variety of OSS topics and technologies.
