I am an old fan of SuSE. I have been using it since SuSE 5.3. SuSE even used comments that I made about the product in advertisements that they ran in Linux Journal. Hands down, it has been the best of breed Linux distribution (except the hiccup with the initial 10.1 open SuSE debacle) since forever.

So… it is with great sadness that I have to stop using it. I can’t believe that Novell took the distribution that I loved and tarnished it with this whole Microsoft deal. It isn’t that I am a Microsoft hater. It has helped pay my bills for years. Why would I hate that?

But now that Ballmer is shooting his mouth off, it is readily apparent what Microsoft’s understanding of the backroom deal was. It doesn’t matter what Novell thinks it was, because Microsoft (like SCO) is trying to sow the seeds of Linux’s destruction… and it appears that it is Novell’s fault for being sucked into this mess.

Novell is losing tons of cred for this. Anything that it gained in the last two years, and I would argue that it gained a lot, just got thrown away. The very fact that you have a special report says that you are getting battered by this decision. SCO is the most hated brand in Linux. Mention it and sys admins (your end users) around the world cringe. I can only hope that the same does not happen to the brands Novell, SuSE, Ximian, and Mono.

I am a regular subscriber to the Novell Open Audio podcast. I think it is very well done and quite informative. I can’t say that your subscription numbers will dip by much. But, I just deleted my podcast subscription, and I won’t evangelize SuSE any longer as the best Enterprise Linux solution out there. For enterprise class Linux, I will recommend Red Hat and for personal use I will recommend Ubuntu.

Good luck.
