Backup and Restore

Storage Management Services (SMS) is a collection of software programs by Novell^® that provides backup and restore services. These services are performed by a collection of components that are independent of operating systems and hardware.

SMS Components

• Storage Management Engine (SME) backs up and restores operations. Enhanced SBACKUP is a basic SME for NetWare^® 5.
• SMDR (Storage Management Data Requester) communicates between the backup program and Target Service Agent^TM (TSA^TM) software.
• Storage device interface communicates between the SME and the storage devices.
• Device drivers controls the behavior of the storage devices.
• Target Service Agents (TSAs) passes requests and commands between the SME and server or NDS^® database, and prepares the data for the SME.
• TSAProxy registers the workstation with the host server.

Enhanced SBACKUP allows backups of SMS Targets such as NDS^TM, binderies, the file system, or an individual workstation's hard disk onto media that can be stored off-site. If you have a hardware failure, natural catastrophe, corrupted data, or incorrectly deleted or changed data, you can recover a previous version of the data.

Enhanced SBACKUP retrieves and reinstates backed up data. The restore session produces the requested data, which is retrieved from the storage media and restored to the location you specify. During a restore session, Enhanced SBACKUP reads the backup storage media and the Target Service Agent compares the media data set to the existing hard disk data set.
