Queue-based Printing Administration Guide

Queue-based print services represent the traditional or legacy implementation of print services provided through NetWare.

To install a printer on the network using queue-based technology, the system administrator must create a Print Queue, Print Server, and Printer object, link them together, and then manage them for each printer on the network. To print, users must install the specific printer drivers, capture a port to that printer, and then wait for their print job to be sent and queued to the printer. While this complicated system works well, its management can be time-consuming and troubleshooting problems with the system can be tedious.

We recommend that you become familiar with Novell's new generation printing architecture, NDPS, which is included with NetWare 5, and begin the process of moving your existing printing resources to this new system. For more information about NDPS, you should view the multimedia Introduction to NDPS that can be accessed from the main browser view for the NetWare 5 documentation set.
