To improve disk reads and writes, see Improving Disk Reads and Improving Disk Writes. You can also increase the speed of disk reads and writes by interleaving volume segments across one or more disks. See Contents > Traditional File Services > Enhancing Disk Response Time With Spanning.

To save disk space, try the following:
