Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 Licensing

General Licensing Guidelines

Novell Open Enterprise Server is licensed per user. The definition of user can be found in the product EULA at www.novell.com/licensing/eula/. Below are some basic guidelines for customers moving to Open Enterprise Server from other versions of qualifying products.

SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server Entitlement for Open Enterprise Server Customers

Novell has recently updated the Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) End-User License Agreement (EULA) to reflect current terms of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) entitlement. The current entitlement allows customers to deploy an unlimited number of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server copies to run Open Enterprise Server services for licensed Open Enterprise Server users. Customers can also deploy an unlimited number of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server copies to support any other software product used to service, support, secure or manage Open Enterprise Server services for licensed Open Enterprise Server users.

The new policy lets customers leverage the power of Linux for consolidation, virtualization and application compatibility.

Upgrading from Novell Open Enterprise Server 1

Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server 2 from Open Enterprise Server 1 will upgrade on a one-to-one basis for their User licenses.

Upgrading from Novell Nterprise® Linux Services 1.0

Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server 2 from Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will upgrade on a one-to-one basis for their User licenses. For example, a company with a 50-user Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 license would purchase a 50-user Open Enterprise Server upgrade license.

Upgrading from Previous NetWare® Versions

Customers upgrading from previous NetWare versions will upgrade to Open Enterprise Server 2 user licenses on a one-to-one basis.

Previous NetWare versions that are user-based - Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server from previous versions of NetWare that are licensed per user will upgrade on a one-to-one basis. For example, a company with a 50-user NetWare 6.0 license would purchase a 50-user Open Enterprise Server 2 upgrade license.

Previous NetWare versions that are site-based - Customers upgrading to Open Enterprise Server from previous versions of NetWare that are licensed per workstation (site) will upgrade on a one-to-one basis. For example, a company with 50 NetWare 6.0 Site licenses should purchase 50 Open Enterprise Server upgrade licenses. Customers who remain with CLA Site License contracts will continue according to the terms of their individual contract.

Previous NetWare versions that are server-concurrent connection (SCON) based - The licensing model for NetWare 5.1 and earlier versions of NetWare were licensed by Server-concurrent connection (SCON), which required a license for every server connection a device made. The User license in Open Enterprise Server tracks by object rather than connection, which can make the product easier to plan, deploy, and track. Each person who uses the software services needs a unique user object, which Open Enterprise Server will use to count licenses and usage. Customers who are licensed for NetWare 5.1 or earlier versions will upgrade on a one-to-one basis, and will track usage by the User licensing model going forward. For example, a 25-Connection NetWare 5.1 license would upgrade to a 25-User Open Enterprise Server license.

In many instances, customers may need less User licenses than they need SCON licenses. For example, a single person who connects to three NetWare servers would need three licenses under the SCON licensing model (NetWare version 5.1 and earlier). This same person would normally only need a single User license for Open Enterprise Server. Under these circumstances, the customer may upgrade to a lower User license count than what they had under 5.1 or earlier SCON licenses. For example, a customer with a 100-Connection NetWare 5.1 SCON license may choose to upgrade to only a 50-User Open Enterprise Server license. This lowers the price of the upgrade, and also relinquishes the extra 50 licenses the customer had under SCON.
