Novell is helping to implement telehealth to improve care and make scarce resources go further. The outer London borough of Bexley has a larger-than-average elderly population, and faces increasing clinical and financial challenges in managing patients with long-term conditions. 25,500 (over 11%) of local people come into this category, and the figure is increasing, placing pressure on hospitals. Bexley's Business Support Unit (BSU) aims to deliver more of these patients' care in community settings. In partnership with telehealth technology specialist Tunstall, PA has helped to implement telehealth for 50 patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Patients are equipped to monitor their vital signs at home with remote support from clinicians. PA is now helping Bexley develop plans for deployment to more COPD patients and those with other long-term conditions. There will be a full evaluation of benefits, a service model and robust criteria for patient selection. Benefits being identified include reduced emergency admissions, earlier discharge from hospital and more effective use of scarce clinical time. Patients are becoming more independent, confident and proactive in monitoring and managing their own conditions.

The Novell NHS User Group is held 3 times a year and is an opportunity for NHS Trusts that use Novell solutions to come together and collaborate, find out how the healthcare providers are getting the best out of the technology and to respond to Novell directly. The group is now in it's 2nd year and has grown to include over 100 individuals that are on the guest list and is being duplicated in the North of the country and in other markets in Scotland. Many find its an invaluable forum to connect with their NHS colleagues that would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.
From April 1, 2011, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and Care Trusts across England were grouped into clusters with some sharing of management teams and board members. The aim of clustering arrangements is to release savings in management costs for investing in front line care whilst preserving sufficient functionality for PCTs to carry out their statutory functions until they are abolished, subject to legislation, in April 2013. The local cluster, NHS South East London, became operational on 1 April 2011 and is a partnership of Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark Primary Care Trusts and Bexley Care Trust. However until April 2013, Bexley Care Trust remains the statutory body responsible
