Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced Children's Hospital Oakland, a full-service pediatric medical center in California, is first to complete its HIPAA Security Requirements Assessment, a new offering in the Novell Healthcare practice designed to assist companies requiring a benchmark of where they are and where they need to be with regards to HIPAA compliance. Children's Hospital Oakland plans to use the assessment to lead them down the path of implementing a unified network environment, which will allow them to simplify and accelerate doctor and patient access to confidential health records and information, while also securing information against unwanted disclosure and access.
"One of our primary challenges is to leverage eBusiness efficiencies, such as providing secure access to system resources and information by patients, doctors and administrative staff, while ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other industry regulations," said Donald Livsey, Chief Information Officer, Children's Hospital Oakland. "Novell's HIPAA Security Requirements Assessment exceeded our expectations. Because of their extensive knowledge of the regulations, the audit took very little of our own time and resources. After a thorough audit of our network, we have a clearer understanding of what we need to do to bring all our network resources together, as well as begin addressing HIPAA regulations. We are putting plans in place that will allow us to move on Novell's recommendations and expect to significantly reduce administrative costs, generate more efficient ways of conducting business, and ultimately improve the quality of healthcare we provide to patients."
Novell Net Services Software Provides Security and Network Management
Novell's Net services software is playing a key role today in Children's Hospital Oakland's security and network management strategies. They are currently integrating NDS eDirectory, ZENworks for Desktops, GroupWise, and BorderManager into its NetWare and Windows NT* environment. In many cases, these products already provide features and functionality allowing Children's Hospital Oakland to meet HIPAA requirements. This includes the ability to centrally manage and enforce end user security policies, secure transmission of identifiable patient information over public networks, manage system and application access across multiple networks at multiple locations, and better manage corporate assets. As they move their operations to the Net, Children's Hospital Oakland plans to leverage eDirectory as the eBusiness foundation allowing them to capture identity information and personalize interaction with doctors, healthcare organizations of all sizes, individual partners, vendors, and patients.
"Novell's Net Services software is helping Children's Hospital Oakland simplify their transformation to eBusiness in order to reduce costs and streamline administrative processes. It will accelerate this transformation while leveraging existing systems and business practices, which is extremely important," said Alex Salehi, world-wide vice president of Novell Professional Services. "Through our newly launched Novell Healthcare practice, we will help companies build one Net for healthcare, while providing technology and consulting services to address pressing HIPAA regulations."
