Southwest's Premier Construction Company Builds its Future with Novell's Secure Web Services
Sundt Construction, one of the top 100 construction companies in the U.S., adds the Novell exteNd Web application development suite to the collection of Novell solutions that power its IT organization.
Sundt Construction understands the importance of a solid foundation. With more than 100 years in business providing general contracting, construction management and design/build services for both private and public sector clients, Sundt has its eye on the future. But it's not bricks and mortar that Sundt is using for this foundation, rather Information Technology - and solutions from Novell are critical to building out this strategy.
Sundt Construction recently made a strategic decision to standardize its integration and Web services projects on the Novell® exteNd™ Web application development suite. After evaluating several market-leading products from companies such as IBM*, BEA*, and Microsoft* against key criteria including ease of use, standards support, rapid application delivery and support costs, Sundt found only one product that met all of its requirements - the Novell exteNd Web application development suite.
"We were really impressed with Novell's integration and Web services products," said Robb Good, Sundt's vice president of IT and recently named one of the premier 100 IT leaders for 2003 by Computerworld magazine. "We had a Visual Basic programmer leading the technical evaluations and he concluded that the Novell exteNd suite provides the best combination of features and ease of use - a fact that we found especially convincing since our staff does not have extensive Java programming experience."
The Novell exteNd Web application development suite features visual development tools that make it easer to build advanced Web applications based on the latest industry standards. It includes an XML integration server for enterprise application integration, business process automation and legacy-to-Web service transformation; an interaction and portal server that enables IT organizations to rapidly deliver and easily maintain rich, personalized Web applications; and a J2EE*-compatible application server for deployment. In addition to supporting a variety of operating systems, the Novell exteNd suite also deploys its applications into any J2EE-compatible application servers. This ensures that customers are not locked into the platform of any individual vendor.
Good added, "Many people in my position will tell you that Microsoft is the safe choice, but since the advent of the Licensing 6.0 program we've grown increasingly concerned about the potential long-term costs of Microsoft solutions. Novell has a long history of producing secure, reliable networking solutions and their commitment to open standards and cross-platform computing gives us confidence that we've chosen a solution we can grow with long into the future."
Sundt Construction is planning an extranet project to further enhance communication and collaboration with their subcontractors. The project will use Web services technologies to-integrate a variety of existing systems including its JD Edwards* ERP system, RightFax and SQL databases, as well as proprietary systems designed specifically for the construction industry. This project will tap into other Novell solutions in use at Sundt, including the directory services and single sign-on capabilities of the Novell Nsure™ product family to secure and manage access to the Web services created with Novell exteNd.
