Novell achieves new OSDL Carrier Grade registration for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9

WALTHAM, Mass. | February 16, 2005

Novell today announced that its SUSE® LINUX® Enterprise Server 9 has achieved OSDL Carrier Grade (CGL) level 2.0 registration. The first major Linux distribution to attain OSDL CGL 2.0 registration, this achievement marks a significant step in the maturity and viability of Novell's premier Linux operating system for enterprise customers.

The Carrier Grade functionality provides customers with assurances of higher availability, reliability, performance and response times levels, allowing them to deploy their applications on the SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server platform with greater confidence. Network Equipment Providers in the telecommunications industry as well as other enterprise customers who rely on the service response characteristics that are defined by carrier-grade applications require OSDL CGL certification for solution implementations.

Through encouraging a quality controlled development process, customers are assured approved levels of stability, scalability and functionality in future product offerings. Delivery of Novell's SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 with carrier-grade functionality marks another step in the provision of standardized open software environments necessary for developing rich media and enhanced telecommunication services that are more competitive than many proprietary offerings in this market. OSDL CGL provides a set of functional requirements that leverage industry standards such as POSIX, SA Forum and others. Compliance with the OSDL CGL criteria facilitates the portability between standards-based operating systems.

"Linux is making an enormous impact in the telecommunications industry as carriers and network equipment providers look to reduce costs and rapidly deliver new applications into their markets. The OSDL CGL registration program provides valuable information for customers assessing Linux capabilities," said John Cherry, OSDL CGL Roadmap Coordinator.

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) is an organization dedicated to accelerate the adoption of Linux in the enterprise and the Carrier Grade Linux Working Group is an industry forum established by OSDL. The organization is supported by a global consortium of industry leaders, including Novell, who contribute to the collective establishment of the criteria defined by the carrier-grade level in response to customer demands. OSDL CGL registration is a self-registration program.
