Novell Delivers Data Center Virtual Infrastructure Through Expanded Partnership with VMware

Novell and VMware to deliver new offerings to improve operating efficiency

and lower total cost of ownership

SAN FRANCISCO (LinuxWorld Conference and Expo) | August 9, 2005

Novell today announced a significant expansion of its partnership with VMware, including joint development and delivery of new technology solutions, services offerings, software distribution, and expanded customer support. VMware* virtual infrastructure is the leading data center virtualization solution today, with more than 10,000 enterprise customers, including more than 80 percent of the Fortune 100. The cooperation between Novell and VMware will create new solutions for Novell's customers to drive server consolidation, migration, provisioning, zero-downtime maintenance and dynamic workload optimization. As a result, customers can leverage their existing infrastructure and improve the return on their technology assets.

“The expansion of our partnership with Novell reflects customers' requirements for VMware virtual infrastructure to optimize total cost of ownership, manageability, and availability in their business-critical data center environments,” said Brian Byun, vice president of strategic alliances at VMware. “Novell represents a critical partner within our ecosystem not only as an application provider but as a platform designed for the enterprise data center.”

Novell will support virtualization solutions focused on data center infrastructure for customers running all leading Novell products, including SUSETM Linux Enterprise Server, Open Enterprise Server, NetWare, eDirectoryTM, ZENworks® and GroupWise®. Novell will now offer enterprise-level technical support for VMware, giving customers a single point of contact for support needs. In addition, VMware and Novell have established a program to make SUSE Linux-based partner solutions broadly available to customers. In the pilot phase of this program, Novell has distributed more than 5,000 Novell® Open Enterprise Server and SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server environments in VMware virtual machines to simplify and accelerate customer evaluation, development, and testing of these solutions. Novell has also

incorporated VMware products into their consulting methodology for virtualization, and will provide design, consulting, and integration services for Novell solutions that rely on VMware virtual infrastructure.

“VMware represents a key component in Novell's data center solutions portfolio,” said David Patrick, vice president and general manager, Linux, Open Source Platforms and Servers for Novell. “Our partnership will enhance VMware virtual infrastructure solutions for Novell products, including disaster recovery, dynamic workload migration and zero downtime maintenance. It's all about improving operating reliability, and it's a significant advantage for our customers.”
