Sherwin-Williams Standardizes its Retail Stores on SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell

WALTHAM, Mass. | December 1, 2008

Novell today announced that the nation's largest specialty retailer of paint, stains, coatings, wall coverings and sundry items will be standardizing on SUSE® Linux Enterprise Point of Service (POS) as the operating system for its retail store multi-function desktop/registers and in-store servers. As a global retailer of some of the most popular paint brands, Sherwin-Williams has more than 3,000 retail stores in 50 states, Canada and Latin America. SUSE Linux Enterprise POS will provide the paint retailer with a secure, cost-effective and reliable operating system.

"We wanted a supported Linux platform to replace our current POS operating system and evaluated several distributions before selecting SUSE Linux Enterprise," said Tim Bartel, manager of POS Applications Development at Sherwin-Williams. "We chose Novell because of its flexible pricing model, support capabilities and code compatibility across our relevant applications, desktops and servers."

Working with Novell® channel partner Mainline Information Systems, Sherwin-Williams will be moving from their current POS operating system to SUSE Linux Enterprise POS, giving them access to enterprise-class support including the latest software and maintenance updates, security patches and product assurances.

"As a platinum partner in the Novell PartnerNet® program, Mainline provides infrastructure technology solutions, as well as implementation and consulting services for companies nationwide," said Greg Schneider, regional vice president at Mainline Information Systems. "We believe SUSE Linux Enterprise POS is one of the best-engineered and reliable platforms optimized for the retail environment. SUSE Linux Enterprise POS delivers a robust operating system for point of sale devices and in-store servers that can help reduce total cost of ownership through centralized administration and deployment tools, small footprint images and support for heterogeneous IT environments."

Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions at Novell, said, "By selecting SUSE Linux Enterprise for its in-store computing platform, Sherwin-Williams has a solution that can work across its entire infrastructure from point of sale terminals to mainframe servers. As a result, Sherwin-Williams can reduce the complexity of its environment and improve its efficiencies of scale. We're pleased to have them as a customer."
