Success Story
South San Joaquin Irrigation Distirict
How does an agricultural water district find software to meet its specialized requirements? Software that can bill thousands of customers every billing cycle and quickly and accurately process thousands of payments is not available in standard packages. The answer is the flexibility of Appgen and the reliability of Novell/SUSE Linux.
SSJID chose the Mass Billing package from Venegas Littman and Associates, Inc. running on a Novell/SUSE Linux departmental server. The VLA Mass Billing is developed in the Appgen Development Environment allowing the software to be rapidly adapted to specific practices. An interface to a high-speed copier/duplicator provides printing of over 4000 invoices an hour and bar code assisted processing of receivables keeps the accounting staff from being overloaded by the incoming payments. Legal notices are produced by the billing software using the high-speed printing interface and customer newsletters through an interface with publishing software. Mass Billing handles the Accounts Receivable functions but is seamlessly integrated with Appgen Accounts Payable, General Ledger and Payroll to form a full accounting system.
Three SUSE Linux servers are installed, one as an accounting appliance, a backup and print server and a firewall and security server. The backup server provides backup for the accounting server and critical files on all the PC workstations in the SSJID network. As a print server it controls over a dozen printers including laser printers, copier duplicators and line printers. The firewall and security server controls all access to the Internet for the accounting, engineering, and operations departments. The reliability and ease of management, along with VLA's support, lets the entire complex operation be managed by the office manager without any specialized IT staff.
