product details
Network Appliance is the first vendor to unify SAN and NAS in a fabric-attached storage (FAS) system with block and file protocols integrated as peers in a single, unified architecture.
NetApp filers support iSCSI, a new IETF standard protocol for encapsulating SCSI commands into TCP/IP packets. iSCSI enables I/O block data transport over IP networks. Customers can create a SAN with reduced installation and operating costs since iSCSI uses stable and familiar TCP/IP standards.
The need to hire specialized personnel and training costs are reduced by using an iSCSI storage network. NetApp and Novell's support for iSCSI brings the benefits of a SAN architecture with the lower cost of an IP network.
iSCSI SANs will be attractive to Novell environments that have:
- Distributed IT environment
- Projected data growth in next few years
- Multiple Netware servers in divisional, departmental or workgroup environments
- Business objectives to consolidate data storage to improve data availability and reduce operating costs
- Budget and staffing constraints limiting Fibre Channel deployment
