SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for IBM POWER Systems
Combining forces to deliver robust enterprise solutions
announcements
a winning combination
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM's POWER5—based® systems—pSeries,™ iSeries,™ OpenPower™ and the new System p5™ servers —makes it possible to deliver the advantages of the latest Linux kernel on an affordable, flexible and reliable hardware platform providing customers an unrivaled level of product performance, scalability and qualities of service for mission critical applications.
Some of the key POWER5™ technology features available with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for POWER include:
- Support for micro-partitioning with up to 254 partitions per system providing a low cost solution for server consolidation.
- Support for Dynamic LPARresources can be dynamically added and removed without requiring a partition reboot.
- Simultaneous multithreading for increased performance.
- Virtual storage, which allows multiple partitions within a POWER5-based system to share storage. One partition, the I/O server partition, owns the physical adapters and storage (which may be internal or external). Virtual adapters allow other partitions, I/O client partitions, to use storage from the I/O server partition.
- Virtual LAN, which provides a fast and cost-effective way for partitions to communicate with each other over the physical or virtual LAN.
binary compatibility assurance
The POWER5 processor-based servers including the new POWER5+ are ready for Linux. IBM wants to ease your transition in supporting the POWER5-based IBM eServer p5, i5, OpenPower and the new POWER5+ System p5 servers with the exciting new features found in Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM POWER. Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IBM POWER Systems, based on the new 2.6 Linux kernel, provides support for the POWER family of IBM servers.
32-bit applications that support Linux on POWER4™ or PowerPC based servers today should only require moderate regression testing to confirm compatibility with POWER5. This statement does not include applications that have statically bound one or more of the libraries provided in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for IBM POWER Systems. For these applications, we recommend a recompile or re-linking.
64-bit applications will require a recompile and recommended regression testing to take advantage of this planned Linux Standards Based certified distribution. For your recompile and regression testing convenience, you can test drive the new POWER5 technology and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 at IBM’s Linux Test Drive Center.
From an IBM system perspective, POWER5 is just the latest step in the stellar POWER architecture family. For more information on Power architecture, please visit the IBM Power Architecture Web site.
