And you thought giving up your blankie was scary

The increasing use of MP3 players, USB sticks and free wi-fi is creating a major security problem for organizations – the thumbsucking threat! With the growing use of these endpoint devices employees can be much more mobile and productive, however they could also expose corporate data to unauthorized eyes — or worse — malicious use.

ZEN turns 10

ZENworks ThenTen years ago this week, Novell launched a new product designed to help organizations manage their IT environments and save countless hours and effort — it was known as Z.E.N.works, because it gave IT admins a Zero Effort Networking solution. Today, with more than 40 million ZENworks users worldwide, ZENworks is all grown up and an integral component of Novell’s IT management strategy, with comprehensive offerings from the desktop to the data center.

ZENworks NowWith each passing year ZENworks has added solutions to help customers reduce the complexity, vulnerability and cost associated with distributed environments that have a mixture of devices, operating systems, software, and other IT resources. New additions include endpoint security management, virtual machine management, as well as innovative enhancements to its desktop management capabilities with the recent release of ZENworks Configuration Management.

SAP, HP, IBM and SUSE Linux Enterprise

Earlier this week, SAP announced additional Business All-in-One solutions, this time partnering with HP and IBM. Details on specific configurations with each partner are listed in those announcements, but a common thread is the SAP Business All-in-One solutions are based on SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell. The integrated solutions are targeted at small to midsize enterprises to simplify deployment and lower costs.

Another NASA supercomputer with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

NASA is getting its next supercomputer from SGI, specifically a 20,480-core SGI Altix ICE system, for those of you thinking of maybe getting one for the family. As you might have guessed, it will run SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell.

NASA’s new supercomputer will be one of the largest SGI Altix ICE systems ever deployed, joining the State of New Mexico’s Encanto, a 14,336-core SGI Altix ICE system which is currently ranked as the third most powerful supercomputer in the world. And yes, it also runs SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

OpenSolaris and Linux

A little bit of Interop from the comfort of your desktop

This week the Interop conference is happening in Las Vegas and Novell is at the show. If you weren’t able to make it to Vegas, Network World has done some video interviews that help to provide a taste of the event and the discussions that are happening here. Stephen Pollack, CEO of PlateSpin, which was recently acquired by Novell, sat down with Network World’s Beth Schultz to discuss the synergies between Novell and PlateSpin and where virtualization management is heading.
