You may have seen that Sun announced the availability of OpenSolaris yesterday. For some informed perspective on how OpenSolaris and Sun relate to the Linux community, check out openSUSE community manager Joe Brockmeier's take on the issue. The question now is what will Novell do with its ownership of UNIX IP. I'm hoping Novell tells Sun to release openSolaris under GPLv2 so Linux kernel developers can take its inventions and use them. Maybe there could be a SUSE flavor of openSolaris and openSolaris could be in the build service. Ubuntu has shown that a group which doesn't have many kernel developers can be a popular community distribution. How rich would it be if the most popular openSolaris wasn't even Sun's.
