SUSE Perspective on Oracle's Contribution of OpenOffice.org to Apache

SUSE has been asked about Oracle's proposal to contribute OpenOffice.org to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and what this means for our engagement in LibreOffice and the Open Document Foundation.

SUSE appreciates this move by Oracle. Donating Open Source software and associated trademarks to an independent organization is always a positive.

At the same time, SUSE is continuing to invest in LibreOffice and The Document Foundation. We have migrated our existing customers to LibreOffice, and continue to add new subscription customers for LibreOffice on both Linux and Windows. Alongside the community and many other Linux vendors, we will further enhance LibreOffice with a continued focus on customer needs such as interoperability.

Customers with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop or LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org for Windows subscriptions can be assured that they will receive enterprise support for a fully compatible, best of breed open source office suite – now and in the future.

SUSE is looking forward to the future contributions of IBM and potentially others into this new ASF incubator project, but would certainly have liked to see such contributions go directly to LibreOffice. We will follow the incubation process very closely to understand future opportunities and possibilities which can improve our offerings for our users and customers.

We also encourage the Apache Software Foundation and The Document Foundation to engage in a fruitful discussion which will lead to an even more vibrant open source office community.

We continue to believe that participating with a wide range of volunteers and vendors, in truly open development projects, ultimately gives the best result for our customers and the community. Which is why Novell joined The Document Foundation and its development of LibreOffice back in September.

Today, LibreOffice from Novell features updated pricing and peace of mind for customers requiring support for their office productivity alternatives on Windows and Linux. The updated pricing includes three years of Novell support, bug fix and upgrades in two new multi-device subscriptions options: $7,000 for 50-devices and $110,000 for 1,500-devices.
