Novell BorderManager
Direction for Novell BorderManager and Novell Security Manager by Astaro
In August 2006, Novell announced that Novell BorderManager 3.9 will enhance the forward proxy, content filtering and VPN services Novell has delivered to thousands of customers on the NetWare platform, while simultaneously providing a migration path to Linux. As part of this direction, Novell is also discontinuing the Novell Security Manager by Astaro product. The following information provides additional details on this announcement, as well as guidance for Novell customers currently using either product.
Novell BorderManager – Statement of Direction
BorderManager 3.9 includes enhancements such as a consolidated management framework, a Linux VPN client, more robust and user-friendly site-to-site VPN services, and tools to facilitate a migration to the Linux Access Gateway that will be available in Novell Access Manager 4, anticipated in 2009.
Novell Security Manager by Astaro – Statement of Direction
Novell Security Manager by Astaro has been discontinued as a separate product in the Novell portfolio and has been removed from the Novell price list effective February 15, 2007. Novell will continue to offer general support for Novell Security Manager by Astaro 6.1 through February of 2008. During this time, Novell will also address critical issues verified through Novell Technical Services.
Customer Guidance
- Customers who want access management, content filtering, reverse proxy, application security and site-to-site VPN capabilities supported on the NetWare platform should upgrade to BorderManager 3.9. Per Novell's standard support policies, this product will be supported and maintained for three years from the date of release.
- BorderManager customers who want forward and transparent proxy with content filtering services on the Linux platform should plan to upgrade to Novell Access Manager 4, currently slated for release in 2009. Novell BorderManager customers with current maintenance contracts when Novell Access Manager 4 is released will be entitled to these BorderManager-related capabilities free of charge. Pricing for BorderManager customers who want to take advantage of the additional functionality in Novell Access Manager 4 will be determined closer to the anticipated product release date.
- Customers who need traditional Unified Threat Management functionality or Linux-based firewall/VPN and network security capabilities may purchase the Astaro Security Linux product or a comparable third-party offering. Astaro remains a valued Novell Market Start partner, and Novell will continue working with Astaro to provide VPN authorization against Novell eDirectory and other points of integration.
- Existing customers of Novell Security Manager by Astaro can take advantage of a migration path provided by Astaro to the latest version of its Astaro Security Linux product.
