SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop

Increase Flexibility

SUSE® Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 offers the flexibility to meet a wide range of customer needs. You can deploy it as a general-purpose desktop, use it in various thin- or thick-client configurations (for example, kiosks and cash registers), or rely on it for high-end engineering workstations. Organizations like PSA Peugeot Citroen use it for general office worker deployment, the State of Indiana Department of Education uses it in traditional desktop environments, Ritz Camera uses it as a thick client point-of-service system, and Badcock Furniture uses it in thin-client deployments.

Because SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is almost entirely based on open source software, it provides you greater flexibility than any proprietary platform. Virtually any element of the desktop can be tailored to your specific needs. Your administrators can develop in-house expertise on the platform for maximum control, or you can choose to use SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop right out of the box with the shipped configuration.

Unlike Microsoft Windows (both XP and Vista), advanced configuration does not require a separate software stack that costs you additional for-fee licensing and training investment. SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is built to respect and satisfy the specific needs of your business. Examples of the breadth of customization possible include:

  • Granular control of the installation image. Specify how your desktop operating system and applications should be configured at a fine-grained level for each user, or the overall enterprise, with regard to the office suite settings, network access settings, desktop dialog preferences, and more.
  • Thin-client deployments. For thin-client machines, you can remove all unnecessary applications to minimize the installation footprint and further improve security and reliability.
  • User authentication management. Benefit from a high level of granularity by leveraging pluggable authentication modules, common authentication service adapters, and many other open source solutions.
  • Desktop lock-down. Configure user access restrictions–for example, by preventing the ability to download applications or to write to removable media–in order to further harden your critical systems and prevent unauthorized activity.
