Provides fault tolerance to the directory data by allowing multiple copies to be stored on separate servers.

The Novell eDirectory full-service directory not only segments (partitions) data according to user need, it distributes data to the location where it is most often retrieved. Distribution improves performance and makes storage more secure.

Example:

In a typical directory service the entire contents of the directory are placed on a single server as shown in the first example. The Novell eDirectory full service directory provides this capability but also allows the contents of the directory to be segmented and distributed across multiple servers. As shown in the second figure, multiple copies of each segment of the directory can be placed on separate servers to provide fault tolerance and easy access to the data.
