Helps You Plan for Storage Growth

Determine your storage growth rate, project capacity needs and more

If you are managing your network storage, you are undoubtedly working hard to maintain enough free capacity to handle expected growth. One way to maintain free capacity is to buy large, expensive storage devices with enough disk space to accommodate growth for a certain amount of time.

Novell File Reporter offers a better and more accurate way of planning for storage growth.

Novell File Reporter generates reports that tell you what files you can consider moving or deleting from your primary storage. It can also generate reports that display volume storage trends. Using this information, you can compare growth trends for a volume between two points in time. The report information includes the number of files, overall file size, available free space and more.

Using this data, you can determine the growth rate on a volume, project when you will be near capacity and budget for more storage in advance.

Trend data can also compare one volume’s growth rate with that of other volumes. You can use this to investigate unusual growth trends. For example, if the available disk space has diminished dramatically over a short period, you might want to run an owner report to see who is storing the most files.

The comparison report lets you compare the total number of files on a volume between two points in time. In our example, if the owner report shows a high number of non-work-related files, you can remove them and then run a comparison report to view the change in available disk space.
