Server Consolidation Utility and NetWare Migration Wizard

Overview

Juggling too many servers? The Novell Server Consolidation Utility and NetWare® Migration Wizard have been combined in a single launch interface that asks you a few simple questions about what you want to do and then launches the appropriate utility for you.

The Server Consolidation Utiltiy is a file and print consolidation tool that helps you reorganize your network by copying data from any number of existing source servers to a smaller number of destination servers. This results in having fewer servers to manage, simplifying your network administration processes and lowering your IT costs.

Supported source servers include Novell NetWare 4.2, 5.1 and 6.x servers. Valid destinations include Novell NetWare 5.1 and 6.x servers, a Novell NetWare Cluster/SAN, a Novell Branch Office appliance and Novell Open Enterprise Server on either the Novell NetWare or Linux platform. The utility lets you copy entire volumes or specific directories to one or more destination servers in the same Novell eDirectory tree or in different Novell eDirectory trees. The accompanying rights, trustees, ownership and namespace information are copied to the destination server along with the files.

Another useful feature in the Server Consolidation Utility is the ability to reassign several NDPS Printer Agents within the same tree to a single NDPS Print Manager. This simplifies your network printing configuration.

Intelligent Consolidation

With both the Migration Wizard and the Novell Server Consolidation Utility, you model your project using simple drag-and-drop procedures before you actually perform the migration or consolidation. This helps prevent errors from interrupting you and allows you to correct mistakes before they happen. Additionally, key tasks such as migrating users and their file permissions, assigning passwords and migrating file systems to a designated Novell eDirectory tree are automated. This automation eliminates the need to choose from various utilities that would help you perform these tasks individually.

Key Features

In addition to the functionality described above, the Server Consolidation Utility lets you:

  • Disable login on the source server during the copy process to prevent users from opening files and thereby causing incomplete data transfers
  • Filter the files you want to copy according to the date
  • Exclude specific file types or file names from the copy process
  • Synchronize file and folders so that data deleted after you run a consolidation project is also deleted on the destination server if you run the project again
  • Automatically compare file information between the source and destination after the copy process is complete to validate the integrity of the file copy
  • Add users to directory services on the destination tree if they don't already exist
  • Specify a default server and home directory path for any new users you create on the destination server
  • Copy an expanded list of user attributes when creating users
  • Schedule projects to run at the most convenient time without having to monitor them

The Server Consolidation Utility is bundled with Novell NetWare 6.5 and Novell Open Enterprise Server.
