OpenOffice.org

First, as one of the leading contributors to the OpenOffice.org project, Novell has consistently brought strong innovation and leadership to the table. We have one of the largest teams of full-time OpenOffice.org engineers contributing to the project outside of Sun. As a result, you can rest assured that going forward, we will continually be at the forefront, to build innovative features that will best meet the office productivity needs of enterprise customers.

Secondly, the upstream edition of OpenOffice.org lacks the enterprise support that is essential for business customers—customers need to scour community forums to find the answers to their questions. OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows, on the other hand, ensures enterprise peace of mind through our world-class support capabilities.

Finally, the upstream version of OpenOffice.org lacks key features required by business customers, including stronger interoperability with Microsoft Office, rich file import capabilities for Microsoft Works, WordPerfect and scalable vector graphics files, enhanced Excel compatibility, advanced VBA macro interoperability, and more.

Sun StarOffice

Compared to Sun StarOffice 8, OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows delivers lower TCO: Support is fully included for the length of a subscription, while Sun StarOffice customers must pay for per-incident fees after the first 60 days.

In addition, from a features perspective, OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows includes key capabilities that better meet the needs of enterprise customers. These features include stronger interoperability with Microsoft Office 2007 files, stronger Excel interoperability and VBA macro support, and more extensive file import capabilities. These capabilities include the ability to read Microsoft Works, WordPerfect and scalable vector graphics files.

IBM Lotus Symphony

Compared to IBM Lotus Symphony, OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows is backed by world-class Novell support capabilities, which makes it the ideal office productivity suite for the enterprise. In contrast, customers using IBM Lotus Symphony need to search community forums in order to get their questions answered, which makes it difficult and cumbersome for enterprise customers to get their needs quickly and easily answered.

IBM Lotus Symphony also lacks key features of OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows that are important for the enterprise customer. IBM Lotus Symphony has no database and drawing application, no support for VBA macros, no document digital signing, no preloaded templates, limited forms support and lacks compatibility with Microsoft Office 2007 files.
