SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8

Enterprise Server 8 for IBM iSeries/pSeries

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 provides users of the small IBM iSeries/pSeries mainframes with a flexible HA operating system just like on large mainframes.

High availability, scalability, and computing performance are the strengths of this hardware architecture. Hardware resources can be allocated freely. These hardware properties combined with SUSE Linux nterprise Server and countless applications form an excellent symbiosis. Enterprise Server 8 for iSeries/pSeries is based on proven and trend-setting UnitedLinux technology, thus facilitating the port of applications to this hardware architecture and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8.

Consolidation of the Server Hardware

The performance of the hardware architecture and the versatility of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 enable the consolidation of multiple servers of other hardware architectures on one server. For example, up to 31 independent Linux environments can be run on a single IBM iSeries machine. Accordingly, several servers can be combined in one system. Moreover, a reduced number of servers greatly simplifies the system administration.

Increased Performance and Availability

The PowerPC architecture boasts important advantages in the fields of high availability and central management. Generation 8 of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for IBM iSeries/pSeries was especially optimized with a view to these aspects. For example, the "SAN functionality" (Storage Area Network) allows hard disk space allocated to Linux to be added, moved, or deleted - with RAID protection. At the same time, this possibility increases the redundancy, i.e. the security and availability of the data.
