Novell Storage Manager 3.0


Novell eDirectory

The following are minimum requirements for each of the components in a Novell Storage Manager 3.0 deployment in eDirectory™.

Novell Storage Manager Engine
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2a or later with an x86 or x64 processor
  • eDirectory 8.7.3.9 or later; or eDirectory 8.8 SP 2 or later
Novell Storage Manager Event Monitor
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2a or later with an x86 or x64 processor
  • SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2 or later with an x86 or x64 processor (currently does not support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11)
Novell Storage Manager Agent
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2a or later with an x86 or x64 processor
Novell Storage Manager NSMAdmin Management Tool
  • Windows platform with .NET 3.5 Framework installed
Novell Managed Storage Platforms

Novell Storage Manager performs server-to-server communication to targeted Novell servers. These servers can be any of the following:

  • Novell NetWare NSS volume
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 1 Support Pack 1 with NSS volume or NCP-enabled volume
  • Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 running SUSE Linux with NSS volume or NCP-enabled volume

Warning: Data moved from NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 2 or later could have file and folder names with UTF8 characters not supported on earlier versions. If this is a possibility, these platforms should not be used as target or vault paths. Novell recommends the latest support pack available for the particular platform be used, on all production servers.


Microsoft Active Directory

The following are minimum requirements for each of the components in a Novell Storage Manager 2.51 deployment in Microsoft Active Directory.

Novell Storage Manager Engine
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with an x86 or x64 processor (Member or DC Server) Windows Server 2008 SP2 or R2 recommended
  • .NET 2.0 Framework installed on the server
  • For quota management, Microsoft File System Resource Manager (FSRM) must be installed
  • Forest functional level of Windows Server 2003 or later in native mode
  • Hotfix KB 973278 installed1 (for managing Profile Paths or storage with redirected folders)
Novell Storage Manager Event Monitor
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 or later or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with an x86 or x64 processor (Member or DC Server)
  • Forest functional level of Windows Server 2003 or later in native mode
Novell Storage Manager Agent
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 or later (for deployment without quota management) or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (for deployment with quota management) with an x86 or x64 processor (Member or DC Server) Windows Server 2008 SP2 or R2 recommended
  • For quota management, Microsoft File System Resource Manager (FSRM) must be installed

1 Hotfix Requirements: In cases where managed storage may include Profile Paths or redirected folders, such as "My Documents" folders redirected to home folders, the Windows Server hotfix referenced in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 973278 will need to be applied to any Engine and Agent servers involved in the data copy process.

This hotfix only applies to the following platforms where the Engine or an Agent is installed:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 SP1
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2

This patch does not apply to either Windows Server 2003 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

In cases where the hotfix has not been applied to the affected systems, symptoms may include stuck Copy Data pending events with the message "Current Error - 32 : The requested operation is not supported" in the properties for that event as well as the error message identified by the hotfix "0x00000032 (ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED)" appearing in the log file of the Engine or Agent that attempted processing the data copy.
