Novell Buys Software Maker PlateSpin for $205 Million
Mark Long of CIO Today quotes Ron Hovsepian as saying, "Together, we will have the most comprehensive workload-management solution that allows customers to monitor and analyze what to virtualize, provide the tools to seamlessly virtualize and unvirtualize workloads, automate the management of workloads, and provide the leading open-source platform from which to run virtualized work." Long also includes John Dragoon, who is quoted as saying, "With the acquisition of PlateSpin's technology, Novell will be able to provide IT departments with a fully integrated product suite...PlateSpin's disaster recovery offerings are also expected to help Novell optimize the balance between physical and virtual infrastructures."

In his blog posting, Enterprise Strategy Group Analyst Jon Oltsik states, "PlateSpin complements existing Novell strengths. Novell already has very strong systems management tools in its ZENworks suite. Now PlateSpin extends these capabilities to server virtualization and the dynamic data center." Oltsik continues stating, "Kudos to Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian and Co. on this deal. PlateSpin could really provide a significant boost to Novell if it can extend its partnership with Microsoft, cozy up to VMware, and execute at the field level."
