SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9

Service Pack 1

Novell has released the first Service Pack (SP.) for SUSE® LINUX Enterprise Server 9, delivering significant advances in the areas of scalability, security and high performance computing. With this upgrade, Novell continues to set the standard in enterprise Linux technology by providing dramatically improved scalability for very large machines, supporting up to 512 CPUs in configurations such as the SGI Altix using the Itanium Processor Family (IPF)/Itanium2 processors.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 1 also contains all the latest security patches and bug fixes that have been released for the Linux 2.6 kernel and associated packages since last August, when SLES9 was originally released. The fixes and patches have been rigorously tested and fully integrated into the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server environment.

SP1 also includes the most current device drivers for the most recent generation of server hardware for all major hardware architectures (including x86, AMD64, EMT64, Intel® Itanium® 2 Processor Family, IBM POWER and IBM zSeries). The update also adds mainframe capitalization with CPU hotplug support for IBM S/390 and zSeries machines, which now enables a physical CPU to be exchanged during runtime, keeping the system up and running even through server repairs.

SP1 is available to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server customers who have valid Upgrade Protection from Novell. Proceed to view options for downloading SP1.

  • SLES9 with SP1 now supports the newest generation of server hardware for all supported hardware architectures (x86, AMD64, EMT64, Intel® Itanium® 2 Processor Family, IBM POWER and IBM zSeries). In addition, many existing hardware drivers have been refreshed with the lastest updates.
  • Improved performance for reading files from harddisks

Enhanced Features

  • CPU hotplug is now supported for S/390 and IBM zSeries (replace CPUs without affecting proccesses which are running.
  • Multiple processor support increased to 512 CPUs for SGI Altix (IPF/Itanium2) machines

New Features

  • Virtualization layer (CPUSET) implemented, including a kernel update and a suite of configuration tools. Use CPUSET to partition a multiprocessor machine by creating execution areas for different applications or for multiple instances of the same applicaiton with dedicated processors assigned to each. (*for IPF (Itanium2) machines only)
  • PAGG virtualization layer implemented, allowing appications and/or processes to be defined as a group. (*for IPF (Itanium2) machines only). For more information on PAGG, see http://oss.sgi.com/projects/pagg/.
