Novell Security
and Identity Solutions
Sentinel provides a real-time, holistic view of security and policy compliance activities across your IT environment. Sentinel monitors, responds to, and reports on security and compliance events for virtually any data source - including proprietary and custom devices, systems and applications enabling you to manage risk more effectively.
Managing a distributed, heterogeneous IT security environment with conventional point tools is a tall order. Everything - including servers, databases, applications, firewalls, routers, switches, and intrusion detection and prevention systems - produces a flood of data that you must aggregate and analyze to get a clear picture of your organizations security and compliance health.
Sentinel
Sentinel replaces these labor-intensive manual processes with automated, continuous monitoring of security and compliance events and IT controls. Sentinel correlates and analyzes security and compliance events from all data sources in your environment to help you identify security events in real time and respond quickly. Automated incident response management enables you to document and formalize the process of tracking, escalating and responding to incidents and policy violations, and provides two-way integration with trouble-ticketing systems. Sentinel enables you to react promptly, resolve incidents efficiently and prove to auditors that your IT controls work as required.
Automated Security and Compliance Management Across the Enterprise
With Sentinel, you get:
- Integrated, automated real-time security management and compliance monitoring across all systems and networks
- A framework that enables business policies to drive IT policy and action
- Automatic documenting and reporting of security, systems and access events
across the enterprise
- Built-in incident management and remediation
- The ability to demonstrate and monitor compliance with internal policies and government regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, GLBA, FISMA and others
SecureWave Sanctuary Suite
The security and support issues of todays enterprise arise primarily from one major area: end users and their PCs. Malware, data leakage caused by removable media and spyware, and resulting regulatory compliance issues dominate enterprise ITs top concerns.
But most existing security solutions have been unable to stem the tide of ever-increasing security threats, chiefly because enterprise endpoints are porous and becoming more so as new hardware technologies and peer-to-peer applications multiply in the market. A few years ago, few would have considered an iPod a security risk, and the wave of boutique spyware explicitly crafted to target individual organizations might not have been anticipated. But now such threats are a daily reality.
Traditional security solutions are not designed to address such risks simply because they rely on signatures or some other means that react to symptoms after a threat has already appeared. SecureWave Sanctuary Suite provides the two critical components enterprises need to solve problems associated with endpoint executables and devices. Moreover, Sanctuary Suite works in a simple, unique way that puts control back in the hands of IT administrators.
Sanctuary Device Control extends control of I/O devices policies. Users can access only explicitly authorized devices. Sanctuary Device Control manages this by applying an access control list to each device type. To grant access, the administrator needs only to associate objects (organizational units, users or user groups) with the devices and/or device classes to which they should have access.
Sanctuary Application Control (Custom Edition) manages application execution by providing organizations with the capability of exercising total control over the execution of all applications on the network. Sanctuary Application Control works on the premise that the use of all executables is denied unless authorized. Unlike a blacklist approach, which can only prevent known malware from executing, a positive model listing all authorized executables affords protection against all unknown executable-based viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware and system monitors and prevents the use of unwanted (illegal or unlicensed) software.
Your workforce requires access to countless systems: the network, e-mail accounts, line-of-business applications and partner Web sites to name just a few. This poses some challenges. How can you eliminate users' password frustrations, secure your corporate resources and still comply with a growing list of regulatory requirements? Trust Novell to simplify the process. With Novell SecureLogin, your employees use only a single, secure login to authenticate to the corporate resources they need. Users quickly access the network, applications and secure Web sites with automated login and credential management. Novell SecureLogin eliminates users frustrations at having to remember and manage individual credentials for each of their applications. Plus, your IT organization can finally enforce consistent credential policies.
With Novell SecureLogin, you can:
- Reduce password-related helpdesk costs
- Simplify user access to multiple systems and applications
- Increase user productivity and reduce the time users waste waiting for credential resets
- Eliminate the need for sticky note lists users create to remember their passwords
- Reduce your organizations risk exposure from simple, guessable or static credentials;
as well as credential sharing among users
- Comply with government regulations for identity, privacy, policy enforcement, and audit and authentication services
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is a prime example of an information-disclosure regulation that organizations must satisfy to stay in business. To fulfill Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, publicly-
traded companies must generate accurate financial reports. Furthermore, they must enable auditors to understand and attest to how the company reliably initiates, authorizes, records, processes and reports on its financial data.
Recently, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), which governs the Sarbanes-Oxley auditing process, issued clarification that helps organizations and auditors understand what to focus on in ensuring compliance while minimizing auditing costs. PCAOB outlines a top-down approach that includes the following three steps:
- Identify the points at which errors or fraud could occur in the process
- Identify controls to test that prevent or detect errors or fraud on a timely basis
- Clearly link individual controls with the significant accounts and assertions to which they related
These recommendations highlight the critical role that integrated and automated network monitoring plays in the compliance process.
A companys ability to address these requirements is closely linked to the security and access controls defined for its information technology infrastructure and business applications, as these are what enable the financial-reporting process and related activities.
Any unauthorized access to the financial data stored and processed on computer systems and applications can threaten the companys ability to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley.
Because of the key role that technology plays in storing and enabling access to financial data, and because Section 302 of Sarbanes-Oxley requires the CEO and CFO to personally attest to the accuracy of their companys financial reports, the executive office now essentially mandates that the CIO does the following:
- Enable the CEO and CFO to confidently stand behind the accuracy of data presented in financial reports (Section 302)
- Control and secure access to documents, records and financial data (Section 404)
- Store electronic documents and records for seven years and ensure their integrity (Section 103)
- Audit (log and report) all network access that may impact financial applications and financial data (Section 404)
- Enable real-time reporting of events that could materially impact enterprise profitability
Novell Resource Management Solution
As business needs change, IT environments become more complex. Customers are adding new operating systems, devices, applications and other IT resources. These diverse environments are increasing costs and demands on IT staffs, who already have limited resources. They want to find an IT expense management solution that will not only save them money but that will also allow them to work on more strategic initiatives.
Organizations are spending a significant part of their IT budgets on hardware, software and other IT resources. Due to these costs, they want to know that they are getting a significant return on their investment. Not only do they want to know that they are getting a significant return on their investments, they also want to ensure that the resources can be used to their maximum ability. For example, a laptop that may no longer be able to support the latest operating system might be used for a temporary worker or for tracking application usage and re-allocating the license if a user isn't utilizing the software.
Security management isn't just a smart business practice, in many cases it's regulated by law. This includes the ability to track and enforce policies that govern their businesses. These demands are also coming from regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA that require companies to document and prove policy enforcement. The solution that provides a complete and accurate view of hardware and software installations and license compliance is Novell Zenworks Asset Management. You can do with it an intelligent asset recognition which prevents over-counting and lowers compliance risks, fully automatically.
