goal

Troubleshooting iManager Internal Server Error

fact

Novell NetWare 6.0

Novell Tomcat on NetWare

Novell Apache on NetWare

Novell NetWare Web Manager

symptom

Services like iFolder, Remote Manager and NetStorage work OK, but iManager returns an Apache Internal Server Error. No errors are shown in the Apache error logs.

Imanager displays Apache Internal Server Error

change

Never worked. Fresh install of NetWare 6 patched to SP2

cause

Misconfigured Tomcat. Found that the file mod_jk.log (in tomcat\33\logs) was filling up with error messages like:

[Sat Nov 23 13:02:31 2002] [jk_connect.c (143)]: jk_open_socket, connect() failed errno = 61

[Sat Nov 23 13:02:31 2002] [jk_ajp13_worker.c (196)]: In jk_endpoint_t::connect_to_tomcat, failed errno = 61

[Sat Nov 23 13:02:31 2002] [jk_ajp13_worker.c (635)]: Error connecting to the Tomcat process.

[Sat Nov 23 13:02:31 2002] [jk_ajp13_worker.c (848)]: In jk_endpoint_t::service, send_request failed in send loop 2

This made us look at Tomcat in more detail and when we started it and captured the logger screen to c:logger.txt (F2), buried in all the noise we found:

fix

The normal Tomcat listening messages never appeared. When we looked at tomcat\33\conf we found a zero-byte nwapps-NSearch.xml file that Tomcat was trying to parse. After we removed it and restarted Tomcat we got the familiar Tomcat startup and iManage worked.
