Unable to log in using Clear Text via Leopard

This document (3054602) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 6
Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 7
Novell Native File Access Protocol
Apple Macintosh OS 10.5 (Leopard)

Situation

After loading AFPTCP using the CLEARTEXT switch, users are no longer able to log into the server via a Macintosh machine running Leopard (Mac OSX v10.5).
Both users without a simple password and users with a simple password are presented with 2 errors when attempting to log in. The first error is:
"Connection failed. There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator"
After clicking on Ok for that message, this error is presented:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code -5002"

Resolution

Cleartext passwords have been disabled in Leopard. In order to turn this feature on, please follow the information in the MacStuff article - Enabling clear text passwords in Leopard with AppleScript or the MacOSX Hints article - 10.5 Connect to AFP shares with unencrypted passwords
For Netatalk users, you can follow the Vegard.net article - How to get AFP to work with Netatalk in OSX Leopard
