Intel 3945 wireless card and USB devices are not recognized.

This document (3422285) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Lenovo T60 notebook
Integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Clean installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

After installation the wireless network card appears to be configured correctly in YaST but the NetworkManager does not allow a selection for wireless. If in traditional method the wireless device does not exist.

USB devices are not recognized when plugged in.

Resolution

Open the YaST application and select System-->Boot Loader.

The "Section Management" tab should be selected already and the boot options listed. Make sure "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10" is highlighted and click on "Edit" at the bottom.

At the bottom there will be a section for "Other Kernel Parameters". Remove the entry for "acpi=off"

Click on OK then Finish then Logout and reboot the system.

Additional Information

The initial installation was done by selecting the option for installing with "acpi" disabled. This causes the installation to add "acpi=off" to the kernel parameters in the grub boot loader. For this hardware, when acpi (power management) is disabled, it causes trouble for these devices.
