Error: "C022" when starting MTA

This document (3607973) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

Novell GroupWise 6
Novell GroupWise 6.5
Novell GroupWise 7
Novell GroupWise 8
Novell NetWare Client

File Caching is enable / on in the NetWare client

Situation

Corrupt domain database
Error: "C022" when starting MTA
Cannot move GroupWise user and only get destination domain updated in "User move status" window.
Error: "C04F" rebuilding domain
Error: "C22" starting GWIA
Not able to start MTA
Cannot start GWIA
The configuration database could not be open when starting GWIA CO22
Cannot administer GroupWise objects in ConsoleOne
Admin changes not taking effect IE passwords do not change, new users cannot log in, moved users do not move
GroupWise Passwords not changing

Resolution

Turn off file Caching in NetWare client properties on the workstation you use to run ConsoleOne on so that the workstation that you using ConsoleOne on does not use this option. This option has been locking open files causing admin messages to be locked in GW queues as well as locking open database files which can cause corruption
Alternate fix:

Opportunistic locking in the NetWare client is locking GroupWise database files and this is causing the changes to not be written back to the server, which is corrupting the domain databases and causing the above errors. Either disable opportunistic locking (File Caching) on all administrator workstations or disable it on the GroupWise server. To disable op locking refer to http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/10085899.htm

Additional Information

File Caching on the workstation where ConsoleOne runs has the Domain.db locked open and the admin message created in ConsoleOne cannot update the domain database.

GroupWise Version 8 ConsoleOne snapin now "Checks and Warns" for File Caching and File Commit settings

The Novell client settings should be set as follows:
  1. Right click on the Novell Client Red N down by the clock
  2. Go to Advanced settings tab
  3. Highlight File Caching and set to OFF
  4. Highlight File Commit and set to ON
  5. Reboot Workstation
