Using NSSMU in PuTTY will not initialize the device.

Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server (Linux based)
Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux
Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 (OES 11) Linux

Situation

Using a Windows workstation, and latest PuTTY (currently v0.63), selecting F3 to initialize the device in NSSMU does not initialize the device from putty or ssh. The screen returns to the main menu instead of displaying a warning about losing all data on the device.

Resolution

Perform the commands directly at the server console and not through ssh or putty or alter the key mappings to allow the function keys.

In the PuTTY configuration (under : 'Terminal > keyboard),  change the 'Function Keys and keypad' selection from it's default setting to 'Xterm R6'.  This will enable an administrator to use NSSMU and any of the required Function keys through PuTTY sessions.

Additional Information

Putty and some other ssh utilities do not always map the function keys properly with default settings; hence the F3 key will not initialize the device.

Note: On recent OES versions it was found that depending on the chosen terminal type, either function keys 1-4, or function keys 5-12 worked, but not all function keys worked at the same time.
