How to manually generate machinediscovery.xml

Situation

When attempting to discover a machine the job may fail with an error stating that the xml could not be generated or gathered. The purpose of this excercise is to confirm that machinediscovery.exe executes fine on the source workload.

Resolution

1. Verify that the MachineDiscovery.exe file exists in the target machine's ADMIN$ share.

2. Run MachineDiscovery.exe.

3. Verify that the MachineDiscovery.xml file has been generated (it will be in the same folder as MachineDiscovery.exe) and check it's contents for complete machine info.

4. Rename MachineDiscovery.xml to ManualMachineDiscovery.xml.

5. Attempt to discover the machine again.
