Supported Source and Target Platforms for PlateSpin Protect 10.0.2 and Forge 3.0.2

PlateSpin Forge 3.0.2

Situation

This article provides the list of supported source and target operating systems for PlateSpin Protect and Forge.
 
Note that PlateSpin Forge includes its own virtualization platform. Target virtual platforms and image servers listed below apply only to PlateSpin Protect.

Resolution

Supported Workloads in VM Containers

Operating systems:
 
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server* (SLES) 10, 11  (To ESX 3.0 and higher only)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux* (RHEL) 4, 5             (To ESX 3.0 and higher only)
 
*Note - Linux-based source workloads must be Physical or Fully Virtualized. (Paravirtualized source Linux VMs are not supported.)
 
- Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 (including domain controller (DC) and Small Business Server (SBS) systems) (supported for protection to ESX 3.5 and ESX3i Update 2, and higher, only)
- Windows Server 2003 (SP0, SP1, SP2, R2) (including DC and SBS systems)
- Windows Vista, Business/Enterprise/Ultimate (SP1 and higher)
- Windows Server 2000 (SP4)
- Windows XP (SP0, SP2)
- Windows 7
- Windows clusters (supported only to targets on VMware ESX 3.0.2 and later). See “Protecting Windows Clusters” on page 33 of the User Guide.
 
Supported international versions:
French, German, Japanese, Chinese Traditional, and Chinese Simplified
 
Supported Replication Methods
 
Linux workloads use block-based replication only.
 
Windows workloads support either file or block-based replication methods. File-based transfers will leverage VSS technology when available on source servers. (Windows 2003 SP1+, 2008, Vista, and Windows 7)

Supported VM Containers (Protect only)
 
The following virtualization platforms are supported as VM containers:
 
- VMware ESX 3.0.2
- VMware ESX 3i*
- VMware ESX 4i*
- VMware ESX 3.5.x
- VMware ESX 4
 
*Note - ESXi servers must be licensed to allow for remote execution to perform protection tasks. (The free version of the ESXi license does not include this functionality.)
 
*Note - ESX updates for major releases (eg. ESX 4 with Update 1) are fully supported. Please contact Novell Technical Support to report any technical issues with latest updates of ESX.
