AFP Will Not Stay Running

Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux Support Pack 3
AFP
afptcpd
Apple Mac

Situation

AFP will not stay running
AFP must be restarted daily
Mac users cannot log in
/var/log/messages shows lines similar to the following:

Jun  7 15:43:22 lab52a afptcpd[18589]: Created new session: 174 <0x81c2c0>. Existing sessions count: 2

Jun  7 15:43:22 lab52a afptcpd[18589]: [error] VerifyObject: Failed to resolve user name .Marcus.OU=ADM.O=Novell. Error - -601 <0xfffffda7>

Jun  7 15:43:22 lab52a afptcpd[18589]: [error] Failed to create duplicate context for the user: cn=Marcus,OU=NTS,OU=Bracknell,O=NovellLab, Err:-625

Jun  7 15:43:22 lab52a afptcpd[18589]: Closing session: 174 <0x81c2c0>. Use count: 0

Resolution

- Disable the NCP watchdog function
- Edit /etc/opt/novell/ncpserv.conf
- Change the
   FIRST_WATCHDOG_PACKET 1
   to
   FIRST_WATCHDOG_PACKET 0

Workaround:
If you need the watchdog function then use the following to restart AFP:
rcnovell-afptcpd restart
