Environment

Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES 2) Linux Support Pack 3
Linux User Management

Situation

Many messages in the /var/log/messages after installed OES2SP3

PAM_NAM: pam_sm_authenticate: User [root] is reserved and not supported via NAM
PAM_NAM: pam_sm_acct_mgmt: User [root] is reserved and not supported via NAM
PAM_NAM: pam_sm_open_session: User [root] is reserved and not supported via NAM

Resolution

The root user is a reserved user for administering the server.

The message is informational as the root user should be authenticated via the local /etc/password file and not through LUM.  LUM doesn't  attempt to authenticate the root user.
