SUSEManager 1.7 client shows "Service network is missed in the runlevels 4 to use service rhnsd" when insserv command is run

SUSE Manager 1.7

Running the program insserv on a client returns the error "insserv: Service network is missed in the runlevels 4 to use service rhnsd"

This can happen under two circumstances:

1. If you have spacewalksd version 4.9.7-0.11.1 installed on the client
2. This may happen if you have upgraded from version 4.9.7-0.11.1 to a later version on the client. Even after a reboot of the system, the message will appear when you run the insserv command.

To resolve this, update the spacewalksd package to a version later than 4.9.7-0.11.1 and then run the commands

insserv -r rhnsd
insserv rhnsd

or alternatively

chkconfig -s rhnsd off
chkconfig -s rhnsd on

There was an issue with spacewalksd version 4.9.7-0.11.1 where the script /etc/init.d/rhnsd has a default start run level of 4 in it. This was corrected in later version of the package but the links in /etc/init.d/rc4.d to the script are not removed when the new package is installed. The steps insserv -r rhnsd followed by insserv rhnsd will clear the links in /etc/init.d/rc4.d.
