Will I lose events if my server goes down?

This document (7012086) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

NetIQ Change Guardian 4.0

Situation

If the Change Guardian Server goes offline how much data will be lost?
What data can be lost if the Change Guardian Server is unavailable?
Should I plan for a high availability installation to protect my data just in case the Change Guardian Server crashes?
How much data will the Agents store if connectivity is lost to the Change Guardian Server?
Will the Agents lose alerts if the Change Guardian server crashes?

Resolution

High availability or clustering is something that may not be needed since the agents store events by default.  The agents are designed to store around 1,000 events in cache just in case connectivity is lost to the Change Guardian Server.  Once this capacity has been reached then the events will begin to overwrite as needed until connectivity has been restored.  Events can be lost however, if the agent that is storing the events is rebooted during this time period because it will clear out the stored cash on restart.

Cause

The Change Guardian Server can lose connectivity for any reason such as power or network outage.
